YOU are a missionary.

One of the biggest things God has taught me on this trip is that everything He’s called me to do here He’s called me to do at home too. Although I’ll leave here in May, I’m not leaving the mission field, I’m going back to the mission field at home. Although the environment will change, my goal is not. I have been COmissioned and He calls my whole life to be a mission field… and yours too!     Here are a few (paraphrased) thoughts from Thomas Hale’s “On Being a Missionary”: The word “missionary” means “one...

There Are Just Some Things the US Can’t Offer…

As I sit here early in the morning reflecting on the many attributes of Nicaragua that I love I am reminded that there are so many things that the United States just can’t offer me. Although I will always refer to Indianapolis as my “hometown”, Nicaragua has most definitely stolen my heart. As I think about returning “home” in just a little over a month I am saddened to think about how different my life will be. Here are a few things that the United States probably won’t be able to offer me…   After a long run past mountains, volcanoes,...

Let the games begin!

Friday morning I was informed that my sister back in the states was diagnosed with cancer. Right then and there I wish I could have "volunteered," so to say, take her place. In the book, The Hunger Games, Katniss, the main character, volunteers for her sister Primrose in the hunger games…. I knew exactly how Katniss' character felt and what she was going through, why MY sister, why NOW, WHY WHY WHY?? We ask God why almost everyday, but until Friday I had never truly been so angry at God! This was certainly not my first struggle in life, but...

In Loving Memory

There were no words. It was one of those days when I literally had no words. No words to describe the sadness I was feeling. No words to offer a comforting comment. And it didn't even matter that I had no words, as there was nothing I could have said to actually provide comfort.   On Tuesday afternoon my friend Tonio passed away. Over the course of a few weeks, I had developed a friendship with Tonio, one of the many men with the kidney disease. (Read my past blogs “Blood Money” and “Watching a Miracle Unfold” for the full story.) My heart for...

RISE UP!

Luke 17:26-30 {26} "Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. {27} People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all. {28} "It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. {29} But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. {30} "It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed. Did you read that verse above? Read...

Rice and Beans, Lice and Fleas. No Big Deal.

Oh, the life of missionaries. We’re definitely used to the first two by now. They are the main ingredients of every meal and have become a comfort when I sometimes don’t know what else I’m eating. But the last two are new encounters.   As you know, a World Race team (theworldrace.org) came this week to stay here for one leg of their trip. We love them and are so excited they are here! They do a lot more traveling than us, and have been staying in some places quite rougher than our humble abode. They are thankful for beds and decent showers and padded couches.  ...
