Perspective

When you travel, you see a lot of things, learn a lot of things, and meet a lot of people. This week we’re in Granada for debrief. It’s the biggest city for tourism in Nicaragua, so there’s tons of things to do and people from all over the world. It has been kind of weird just relaxing and rejuvenating, but it’s also been super good.     Today we went on a boat tour around a bunch of little islands on the lake just outside the city. On our way there, it was just our group and the tour guide when we picked up a man, and once we got onto...

Love: an international language

Going to a different country, I knew there would be a language barrier. But I thought to myself..”I know a bit of Spanish, how hard can it be?” Having someone translate for you is much different than actually talking to them yourself. But talking to the locals by myself..that’s what I’m going to tell you about.    Very quickly, I realized I can barely communicate. Genesis 11:6-  The Lord said, “if as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.”    By having...

Getting out of the boat

This Thursday we had the opportunity to hold a church service for the people here in Rivas. I was nominated to bring the message because my dad is a pastor. When I was asked this, I immediately froze. Me, Becky Walker, preaching? I never considered preaching to be hereditary. Haha. I knew that whatever I said, it had to be of God to be worthwhile. I prepared what I would say in Spanish and got my bug spray on to walk to church. Ya gotta come prepared for the biting gnats around here. I was able to be comforted in Jeremiah 33:3 which says "Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell...

The 4th of July Nicaraguan Style

"To live well is both an art and a discipline" How to have a great 4th of July on Lake Nicaragua: 1. Wake up and talk to God 2. Wear red white or blue clothes 3. Help the two cooks sort out the pebbles out of the dried beans and practice Espanol.  4. Eat Gallo Pinto (leftover beans and rice mixed together), sandilla (watermelon), and pan dulce (sweet bread). 5. Paint/whitewash the office and some large ants. Try to avoid too much paint in the hair.  6. Have some egg soup and rice for lunch.  7. Remember your long lost kitchen skills and cook up some homemade "apple"...

Commitment and Flexibility

"Commit to something, but always have extreme flexibility to change." -My dear friend and teammate Jena Hooks  Once upon a Wednesday…I was asked to go to town to the doctors to attempt to translate and to get some medicine for the Nicaragua cold that has left the whole team sniffling. Since this interfered with my plan of putting a fresh white coat of paint on the ceiling of the walkway, I wasn't feeling ready to have a flexible plan. I was nervous to translate, and I went anyway. Haha. As we made the 20 minute trek to the bus stop, we saw it pass on the road up ahead....

Hush Up and Listen

It’s official, we are halfway through our time here in Nicaragua! As I write this I realize I’m not at all sure how I want that sentence to read. Is it a “Yay, we’re halfway home!” kind of thing, or is it more of a “What?! We’re halfway done?!” Every time I read it over I change my mind, so I think I’ll leave the interpretation up to you. Being at the halfway point also brought up a few questions for my team, such as: Have we been making a difference? Are we doing all that God would have us do? Will the bugs ever stop biting us? While that...
