A Battle Worth Fighting

Last week my team in Nicaragua split up again and my half went to the other side of Ometepe to a town called Balgüe. While I knew that Nicaragua was a developing nation, I don’t know if what that meant really registered until this past week. Pretty much every house has dirt floors and a tin roof, pigs stumble into soccer games, and…there’s no ATM. I know, right? But Balgüe is also a place where everyone knows each other and the community pulls together for the common good. The men in the town have been working to dig a trench to stop the houses from flooding,...

Santo Santo Santo!

This month we split up as a team again and my half headed back to the mainland to spend the week in Rivas. We stayed at Sarah's house, a woman with an incredible story, a heart of gold and a most contagious laugh, who works at Cicrin part time, and started a church in Rivas. The church body there was absolutely incredible and I felt so grateful to be able to join them in reaching out to the people of this city.  On Sunday we had our first church service with them. After a 25 minute walk, we made it to our meeting place: a small open-air building at the end of a long dirt road...

You make me come alive

I have been listening to a song lately by Bethel that says "this is what you do, you make me come alive". This week at Rivas I got to experience some awesome experiences. First, I will tell about my experience on the moto. I had he great luck of being able to ride on the motorcycle with our host Sarah to go to the post office to send a post card. It was so fun! I hadn't seen the center of town before, nor had I ridden in such crazy traffic. I made sure to hold on tight! When a bicycle taxi almost ran into us our host said "estas dormiendo? (Are you sleeping?)...

How to cook Nicaraguan style

Our plan this week was to visit the schools in the morning to sing and pray for the kids. Unfortunately, this week is vacation for all Nicaragua schools so that plan changed. Instead of going to the schools, I talked with the housekeeper at the house we are staying. It was a great conversation about recipes, God, her children, and her life. She taught me about "ticos" (people who live in costs rica) and I picked up on country rivalries between the neighbors. I got the recipes to make pollo en salsa. (Chicken with sauce), guiso de pipian (a creamed squash dish), carne soya (soy...

Getting out of the boat

This Thursday we had the opportunity to hold a church service for the people here in Rivas. I was nominated to bring the message because my dad is a pastor. When I was asked this, I immediately froze. Me, Becky Walker, preaching? I never considered preaching to be hereditary. Haha. I knew that whatever I said, it had to be of God to be worthwhile. I prepared what I would say in Spanish and got my bug spray on to walk to church. Ya gotta come prepared for the biting gnats around here. I was able to be comforted in Jeremiah 33:3 which says "Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell...

Going to the Mountain

Hello Again 🙂 A lot has happened here in Nicaragua since the last time I blogged, but I want to at least tell you some of the awesome experiences now, and pray I get a chance to share all the stories in the future!  Returning to Cicrin from Balgüe really felt like coming home. There was familiar faces and places, and it didn't take long to feel settled in. At times it almost felt too comfortable. We have a lot of opportunity to have free time. This does give us time to have quiet time with The Lord in a quantity many of us are not used to. I found myself very anxious at the...
