Twelve dollar jar of peanut butter? Check.

So far I've done many things that I'd never thought I'd do before. One of those is buy a twelve dollar jar of peanut butter. It was the best thing I've ever purchased, just saying. We're entering our fourth week being gone, and I can't believe time is moving as fast as it is. It's really weird to think that we have less than two weeks at the orphanage. One of the little girls is in the process of getting adopted, and so her future parents have been at the orphanage spending time with her. As excited as I am for her, it is so hard to watch the other children who...

Jamba Juice

I really think that Jamba Juice should invest in starting up a store on the Island of Ometepe, Nicaragua.            Mangos fall off of the trees faster than you can imagine and the ground is always covered with the tasty fruit (until they let out the goats who eat up about half of them).   This really is not about Jamba Juice though. It's about actions. I have come to understand that actions really do speak… maybe even louder than words. There are a few ways that I have learned this. I have spent the past three weeks on an island in...

Roots.

One of my favorite things to do here at CICRIN is work in the garden. Every morning, 5 or 6 of us lady-folks head out to meet Hilario, the man in charge of the garden and spend 4 or so hours working under his instruction. We do all sorts of things: pick weeds, plant seeds and roots, hoe fields, dig holes, fertilize stuff and water the plants.   Although hoe-ing is not my favorite, it is pretty stinking rewarding! Some days, its really easy because its rained and the ground is soft. Other days, its cracked and dry and full of rocks and you feel like you work for hours and see no...

Bye Bye Miss American Pie

So we have been in Nicaragua for almost a week and I thought I would give you all an update! Here is a list of things I never thought I would get used to…but have: 1. Cold showers 2. Rice and beans at every meal 3. Brushing my teeth under the stars 4. Sleeping with no covers… Because it is so hot 5. Lightening lighting up the sky every night 6. Mangos falling off trees like pine cones 7. Riding in the back of a pick up...

It’s Not All Glitz and Glamour

I've been writing about the fun and exciting things happening here, but this week has been the hardest week so far. We haven’t been doing as much physical labor. We’re still working in the garden and kitchen; weeding, watering, and taking care of tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelon, plantains (they look like a banana but they’re hard and taste like a potato), etc.  This week we worked in the morning until lunch and then had free time/ quiet time. We’re mostly doing this because our team has dominated all of the work that the orphanage had for us to do—they...
