Let Your Little Light Shine

""Scientists say that these things evolved this way over millions of years." He shook his head. "That's a bunch of bunk. I don't think an animal can just all-of-a-sudden decide it wants to make light grow out it's butt. What kind of nonsense is that? Animals don't make light." He pointed to the stars. "God does that. I don't know why or how, but I'm pretty sure it's not chance. It's not some haphazard thing he does in his spare time." He looked at me, and his expression changed from one of wonder to seriousness, to absolute...

There is Always More Than What Meets the Eye

Its true.  We may see a truly bright and hopeful person, somebody who seems super happy and has the brightest smile, but underneath their are a lot of deep wounds. Scars that are visible in the mind everyday, but outside their hidden by the clothes we wear and the face we put on, to hide the fact that there is more. I see that in a lot of the children here at the orphanage in Omotepe, Nicaragua. Juan* for example, is a boy of five or six years, and while he plays and acts silly all the time, there is some very real heartbreak. One night, Juan was playing as the referee for the...

Lessons From Bovine

Sometimes in Nicaragua we experience little things we'd never think in a million years we'd have to deal with. Funny story for example, yesterday a small group of us went running, which was a huge stress relief for me. However, we came to a point where a large cow was coming down the road from the opposite direction. I guess it wasn't used to seeing a group of "gringas" running for fun, and it either got startled or offended or something and started charging down the road towards us. Now this was a dirt road that had 10 foot walls of earth on the sides, so nowhere to...

Variety is the Spice of Life

Variety is the spice of life Living in routine is comfortable. Sometimes, however, you have to spice things up.  I have been switching things up with our beans an rice. Today we has some delicious beans and rice accentuated with some picante sauce. Although I am still working up to a larger amount, the variety in my life makes normal routine more fun. Some day I will be a hot sauce champ. If you are really wanting to switch things up try beans and pasta. It is good stuff, especially with some salsa de tomates (aka ketchup). Unfortunately, mom, we don't have the size containers you...

We were made for Intimacy

This is the end of our first week in Nicaragua. I can't believe it's only been one week. It feels like we have been in this paradise for months. Yesterday was the first day that I really felt comfortable here. I'm getting the hang of things, getting to know the kids pretty well, and settling into the fact that we are going to be here for two months. Here's what our first week looked like at Cicrin: Every day we eat breakfast at 8am, lunch at 12pm, and dinner at 5:30pm. All of our meals have rice and beans in them, but there is some variety. We've...

Lost and found

What do seven girls do on a Saturday night on the island of Ometepe? Our great group decided to get stranded in town. After a fast time trying to figure out the Internet cafe in moyogalpa, we made an attempt to return to CICRIN on the bus. Unfortunately, the buses were all full because it was the end of the day. We walked along the bus route and waited. After we waited, we waited some more. We were able to contact our leaders when we were in town to tell them we were late, but continued to hope for another bus. Feelings of anxiousness set in as an hour passed, our stomachs...
