Sweeping Surrender

Have you ever tried sweeping your yard with a broom? My guess is that you probably haven’t. Well, here in Nicaragua, they use brooms. And let me tell you what, after a few minutes the process becomes a tedious, aggravating chore. One day in particular, my team and I were scheduled to be doing ministry with a pastor for his church. When we arrived at our destination, it was already well over 100 degrees out. The pastor took us to his church so we could prepare the grounds for the service. Some of the team was on “rock duty” and collected every rock in the entire landscape...

Volcanic Creativity!

Hello friends!    Let me just say, God, the God who created you and me – he created some crazy cool things in this universe! Below is a short video of the panoramic view my team and I had standing on top of Cerro Negro Volcano (Leon, Nicaragua). Apologies for the wind! I literally had to crawl/sit down at certain times because the wind got so strong! it was awesome! After we hiked up Cerro Negro with our “surf boards” we “surfed” down the volcano! Bucket list: …CHECK!   Enjoy! 🙂   Volcano ~ Cerro Negro from Rachel Schleier on Vimeo.

Let It Go

How do you release what you’ve held onto so tightly? How do you give up something so close to your heart? How do you cut someone out of your life that has always been there for you?   That’s what I have been trying to figure out. For a year, I have fought against letting a very special person go. Letting this person out of my life. Being obedient to God and just walking away.   How do you do that? How do you completely stop fighting for this person and just leave them?   If you spend 24/7 with a group of 11 other girls, you find out what they’re struggling...

The Little Things

A few months ago I was at a coffee shop with a friend, and we were talking about how we were both in a place where life was kind of monotonous. I was a little bit discouraged, but she looked at me and said, “You need to enjoy the little, every day things. That’s how you get out of that hole.”       And how often do we look at those things and recognize them as awesome things, and really enjoy them?       This week has been a crazy week. Sunday morning was welcomed in by a 6.4 earthquake. Being the Michigan girl I am, I...

Love: an international language

Going to a different country, I knew there would be a language barrier. But I thought to myself..”I know a bit of Spanish, how hard can it be?” Having someone translate for you is much different than actually talking to them yourself. But talking to the locals by myself..that’s what I’m going to tell you about.    Very quickly, I realized I can barely communicate. Genesis 11:6-  The Lord said, “if as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.”    By...

Free

There are times when the Lord really tests you. When he says “give me this, so I can grow you better. So that our relationship will strengthen.   And this week was one of those times. God told me that to deepen our relationship, I was going to have to lay some people at his feet. To give them less of a priority. To give him the first place of my heart.   And I was really scared to do it. The ones he asked me to lay down were those closest to my heart; ones I went to in times of trouble. He kept telling me that He needed to be my all; that He alone could get me through any...
