i think i am absolutely in love with this place.
Our big goal for this summer is to completely re-vamp a local community center into a youth center. Right now it doesn´t have electricity and water, but hopefully by the end of these two months it will have a new soccer and baseball field, a library/computer lab, kitchen and dining hall, auto mechanic school, and boys/girls dorms. I´m so excited to see how God´s going to turn this place around and make it a light in the darkness of this city.
My favorite thing we´ve done so far is the children´s ministry in the barrios (espanol for neighborhood). I´ve connected with one little four year old girl named Kimberly. The first time we met, we had a hard time communicating, but once i picked her up she was attached to my hip for the rest of the night. At one point, she took my hand and lead me to a rock wall just to sit. We couldn´t really talk but we definately tried. <I understood when she said who her father was and where she lived. Mostly we just sat there holding hands. Finally she asked my name again, and when i told her she called me ¨Sarita¨ or little sarah, which i´m totally ok with 🙂 Meeting her gave me more of an incentive to learn my spanish, kinda gave me a face for nicaragua. The next time we met, she ran up to me and remembered my name and we spent the afternoon teaching each other spanish and english. I´m so excited to get to know her over the next two months.
just to let ya´ll know, the coffee ice cream here puts anything in the states to shame…
miss you all 🙂
