Let me set the story straight
There’s something y’all need to know
I’ve tried just to let it slide
But for some reason
I can’t let it go
People tell me it’s true
I’ve heard it again and again
And they really do mean well
But the truth is they don’t know
They don’t know they’re wrong
They’re wrong when say
“Oh! You’re such a good person”
This line echoes in my mind
Again and again
I just smile modestly in response
Not having the courage to speak
Speak out and tell them the truth
The truth is
I am not a good person
I cringe every time those words are said
I am not a good person
and hope I never will be.
Yes, I go to church
Yes, I serve people
Yes, I do good things
But NO I am not a good person
If I’m labeled a good person…
What do I gain?
If I go day in and day out doing nice things
What good does it actually do?
Doing what’s expected of me
What society thinks good Christian girls do
No! I refuse to be a good person.
See I am not a good person
Because deeds don’t define me
My identity is not in the things I do
or the rules I keep.
My identity is daughter
of the one true king.
I do not help people because I am a good person
in fact it’s quite the opposite.
I help people because
I am a liar, a cheater, and a sinner.
A sinner who just happened
to find the love of God.
The love of a God
who doesn’t care what I’ve done
or what I haven’t.
A God who is filled
with compassion and mercy.
A God who sent His son
because He loves all the people
The people we pass by
The people we can’t even
look in the eye.
This God is love.
My God is love
And His love has set me free
Free from sin
Free from insecurities
And free from being a good person
So while all the good people
mark of things on their good person check list
I’ll be over here
living how I’m called to be
Servant to almighty king
who showed me love
and set me free
Because the thing is
I am not a good person
I’m simply a sinner who’s been redeemed
