waiting [somewhat patiently] on the world to change.

The weird thing about living in another country is the limited access I have to social media (Internet, cell phones, televisions, newspapers, magazines, etcetera.) Sometimes I forget about the rest of the world. This is good because it helps me to live in the moment of where I am and what I’m doing. It’s also good because I don’t get stuck wasting time reading the perpetual cycle of facebook updates or those celebrity gossip stories I secretly take pleasure in. My mind is clear from meaningless distraction. On the other hand, I fall behind from the reality that is...

Filled Up With Faith!

I think so far the hardest thing for me in Nicaragua is that we do not have a routine each day. Back in the United States I am always busy. I work a lot and rarely have free time. Although it is good for me to have this down time while I am here, I was expecting my busy lifestyle in Michigan to just turn into a busy lifestyle in Nicaragua; however that has not been the case. Each night we ask our “mom” what we are doing the next day and the response is usually the same, “We are going to do some prayer walking in the morning.” Then sometimes...

His Will and Not Mine

Wow! January 26, 2010 our team decided we were going to climb Mombacho, an inactive volcano. I was excited but I did not know what to expect. I have never hiked before, and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I was told that it was a 5 hour hike from the bottom of the volcano to the top and my excitement died but everyone around me seemed "stoked" so I was "stoked" as well. When we arrived in the parking lot of the volcano we all realized we did not bring enough money to get a shuttle from the parking lot to the base of the volcano. So, we had to walk to the...

A Beautiful Fragrance

A Beautiful Fragrance         A drift, a blow, a breeze   the intensity turns to greet me.      When it’s full, it’s packed, it’s deep And there’s purpose among its mystery.        A memory, a thought, a glimpse Lead me to remember the present.      When it lingers, it draws, it surrounds May it pour over lives in drought.        A drop, a jar, a pool Cover us with what only He knew.      When it anoints, it prepares,...

Unity of the Spirit

“As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to love a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit- just as you were called to one hope when you were called- one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” Ephesians 4: 1-6 Unity- this word appears in scripture quite a bit, however, I don’t think I’ve ever really...

Puzzle Pieces

I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me.  –Acts 20:24    The night we entered the city of Managua, I was deeply saddened.  The streets were dark, and the crumbling, multi-colored buildings seemed unsatisfying.  I searched the eyes of the people on the streets and I saw despair, fear and emptiness, but these feelings weren’t recognized by the people that...
