Ben and Jerry’s for the Woman’s Soul(aka Proverbs 31)

     How often do you hear things like “You throw like a girl?” Or “Quit being such a girl?” Or “Girls can’t do that. They’re too weak/small/fragile”?      I know that most of the time, these are just jokes, but it still happens. You know what I mean, and it’s not just with athletes or in the workplace. Traditional views of gender roles are still being valued, including in places like Nicaragua.      Today we went to a nearby village called Candelaria to do a Bible study with some women...

Pure Authenticity

We’ve been to church here in Nicaragua about three times, so I wouldn’t say that we’re experts yet, but there have been some slight differences between church here and church at home that I’ve observed. This is how church at home usually goes: Sing three or four songs, the pastor gives a message, sing another song, eat donuts, go home. Prayers are sprinkled throughout. Now, there’s nothing wrong with this way of doing church. Before getting here it was the only thing I knew.  But, this is how church in Nicaragua goes: Sing 5 songs (some with motions, some...

Pressing into Pressure

  Before leaving home for Nicaragua, I had completed my Associates of Science degree and was searching where to go from there. I enrolled at a tech school and began pursuing a degree in nursing. In June 2013, The Lord led to me to Adventures in Missions’ Passport trip to Nicaragua. By this point I had only a few more courses remaining before applying for acceptance into the Nursing Program. In pursuance for an answer, I continued to pray about what my next steps should be and questioned if nursing was really the direction that God wanted for me.    On January 21,...

The Nothing Givers

The Nothing Givers: those who give everything when they have nothing. These are the people who live in single room “homes” with an outdoor “kitchen”, an outhouse, and a wheel they turn to get drinking water (which is rarely clean).  My team and I have been immensely blessed by these people. Specifically, we have attended several of their church services, few of which have actually been inside a building.  At these services, several things occur:  Everyone with a chair will offer you theirs until you sit in it – they’d rather stand knowing...

Uncomfortable = Comfortable

It is officially February. Just a few weeks from where we first began our journey. In that short time, I have managed to get sunburnt and sick.. It’s an awesome combination.. (Kidding, it’s awful) On a serious note, my Chaco tan is THE best. (Okay, maybe not so serious) I guess I tell you this so we can talk about church.       I know, it still sounds weird but hang in there with me.   Last Thursday we took an hour and a half ride to another town to visit a church. After riding on the smooth pavement we finally made it to the bumpy dirt road which...

Trust the Driver

Trust the Driver   Nicaragua is beautiful. The people, the places, the country. But there is one thing about Nicaragua that is somewhat scary, and that is the drivers.   This country has crazy drivers. And I have been to New York City, so I know about crazy drivers. If you almost wreck three times in a single trip, it is a good day. There are way more than just cars and trucks on these roads. You’ve got carts and horses, bike buggies and tiny taxis, and then buses and semis parked on the side of the road. In doing the work we have to do, we are having to travel in this mass...
