Tu sabes que Dios o tu conoces que Dios??
Do you know God or do you know God?
In Spanish, there are two words for the verb “to know”. These are SABER and CONOCER. Saber is to know of something or someone, on the surface level, like an acquaintance. Conocer is to know someone or something really well, to have a deep relationship with them.
Yesterday, God put Leo in my path, a 32 year old writer, philosopher, and poet, who does not know God. He knows about Him, but admits that he doesn’t even believe in Him. We had a long, long conversation and I learned that Leo’s belief is: to think you know is not to know, but to know that you don’t know is to know. He thinks that if you know something, you limit yourself to everything else; you put yourself in a box and are closed minded. Leo wants to spend his life understanding all the beliefs and religions and philosophies; to gain as much knowledge as he can. He wouldn’t want to believe in God, because that would make him stop learning, it would make him unable to learn anything else.
I begged to differ. Once you KNOW God, once you believe in Him and long to grow to know Him better, the learning is endless. You learn more and more and more each day. It’s a life of learning and growing.
The more I talk to people here, whether they claim to be Christians or not, the more I realize that many know about God but don’t have a deep personal relationship with Him. They're missing out on the most amazing life a person could have. This is how I was for years of my life. I had a saber knowledge, but not a conocer knowledge. I’m not saying I have all the answers now… that’s the beauty of it. God is outside of infinity. We can never have full knowledge of His greatness and majesty until the day we die and see Him face to face. But a life of pursuit of that knowledge is the best way I can imagine to spend my life.
So, I have a question for you. Do you “saber” God, or do you “conocer” God? Are you satisfied with what you know about God or do you want to learn more? Do you KNOW God? He knows you.
“To know You is to want to know You more.”
