Malnourished Souls

“Jesus replied: ‘If you only knew the gift God has for you and who I am, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.’”
– John 4:10

They stand outside of the hospital.  They whisper nervously in the waiting room.  They crowd the tiny recovery rooms.  Malnourished souls.  It’s not that they don’t necessarily want it.  It could be they don’t know about.  How can they be nourished without knowing the one who can feed them?

Every Wednesday we visit the Hospital in Jinotepe. On these days, A couple of us automatically go into the same room, the children’s recovery room.  As soon as we walk in, everyone stops and stares at us.  We begin with the first child near the door.  We ask a few questions like, “What is your name?” “What happened?” “How long will you be here?” And then we pray.  We pray like we have never prayed.  We pray for big things; for healing.  We pray for every child in the room.  We will probably never know if God healed them that day, or the next, but we can rest assured that even if God didn’t choose to heal them at that moment, that child and their family heard the name of Jesus.

George Matheson said “John the Baptist never performed a miracle, but Jesus said of him, ‘Among those born of women there is no one greater.’ His mission was to be ‘a witness to the light’ and that may be your mission and mine.  John was content to be only a voice, if it caused people to think of Christ. Be willing to be only a voice that is heard but not seen…We are doing more good than we know.  The things we do today-sowing seeds or sharing simple truths of Christ-people will someday refer to as the first things that prompted them to think of Him.”

If God never performs a miracle through me, I am content with being a mouth piece.  I’m content with simply proclaiming the name of Jesus.
